CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

The next morning at breakfast, I tore apart a roll and repeated the mantra I’d developed last night as I’d struggled to fall asleep: That was your body, not your brain.

In the light of day—literally, when Jade and Alexa walked into the breakfast room, the sunshine streaming in through the lace curtains—I knew I’d been right. Jade teased me about stealing all the rolls, and I laughed. Then Alexa smiled at me, and my heart started thumping.

See? Jade and I were friends, and my crush was on Alexa. That thing last night with Jade wasn’t real—it was just chemical reactions. She’d touched my stomach, for the love of god. Some things didn’t involve a logical trip through the brain.

After breakfast, the cast gathered in the music room to begin rehearsal. I couldn’t help but notice that all the downstairs people seemed to be suffering. Lindsey was sniffling, and Noah had his arm around her. Magnus was feverishly whispering to Maddie, who kept shooting concerned glances at Lula. Butler Mr. Lord and House-keeper Mrs. Dooley looked exhausted.

It might have been the demanding early mornings stacking up, but it also could have been the demanding cook. I glanced at Kendrick, who met my gaze. Kendrick’s raised eyebrows could have meant anything, though I was pretty sure they were telling me I should help in the kitchen. But I couldn’t. I needed to focus on this role.

“Places for the top!” Lula called out. As we arranged ourselves for the first scene in the art gallery, Mr. Hoyt passed me and said, “Break a leg.”

“Thanks.” I gripped the brass railing.
